Among the alternative ways of travelling in Barcelona we find the Funiculars and Cable Cars. Although only meant to serve certain specific areas of the city, these have proven very popular and are more of a touristic attraction than a mere way of transport.

This clever transport system was installed in Barcelona in order to climb to Montjuic as well as Mount Tibidabo. The first one departs from the Paral·lel Metro Station, linked to Lines 2 and 3. There is no extra charge to use it as it works with the regular TMB Ticket and to access it it’s not necessary to leave the station.

The ride lasts a little more than two minutes and the final destination is Montjuic, at walking distance from the Olympic Ring and the Joan Miró Fundation.

The Tibidabo Funicular departs from Doctor Andreu Square (at the end of Tibidabo Avenue), and takes you directly to the Tibidabo Amusement Park (the only amusement park in Barcelona) on the top of the mountain.

Once there you can also visit the Collserola Communications Tower (designed by Sir Norman Foster) and the Expiatory Church of the Sacred Heart, but above all don’t miss one of the best observation decks in Barcelona, offering one of the most impressive views of the city.

Did you know that at the time of the Montjuic’s Funicular opening in 1928, it was said to be the fastest cable railway in the world? It moved aroud 6000 people to Montjuic Mountain in just one hour.

Cable Cars

  • Montjuïc Cable Car. If you wish to visit Montjuic’s Castle, you have two choices, take the Bus #55 or #15o right or take the cool Montjuic Cable Car, one of the latest additions to the city.
  • Barcelona’s Port Cable Car (Aeri del Port). The Barcelona’s Port Cable Car takes you from Montjuïc to Barceloneta or the other way around. It’s the fastest way to get from the mountain, to the beach or viceversa. You can take it at Miramar Avenue at Montjuic or at the Sant Sebastiá Tower in Barceloneta (Buses #17, #36, #39, #45, #59 and #64). This is the real deal for getting exciting views of aerial Barcelona.
