It’s hard not to notice the striking elements that make up this hotel when you’re passing by. Conceived as the gateway to Barcelona, it’s a fundamental addition to the dinamic axis between Hospitalet de Llobregat and Plaza España, known as Europa Fira.
The 110 meters high (360 ft.) hotel was awarded with the Emporis Skyscraper Award 2010, as the best skyscraper of the year, ahead of celebrity buildings like Dubai’s Burj Khalifa. Hotel Porta Fira is intended mainly for business people that benefit from the wide range of conference rooms for business meetings as well as the proximity to the airport and great connection to the city center.
Design & History
Inspired by a lotus flower, famed japanese architect Toyo Ito was responsible for the design of the red and black structure. No strager to the Barcelona skyline, Ito is behind Palau Sant Jordi, a music and sports venue of the Olympic Ring at Montjuic, not far from Europa Fira.
The organic form grows steadily only to open like a flower in the upper floors. In order to emphasize this feature, a external skin of aluminium red tubes covers the entire facade.
All circulation and services are located at the center of the building, while the rooms occupy the entire outer ring.
In order to maximize the effect of natural light and great views. 311 rooms are equipped with free safe, toiletries, satellite TV in plasma sets, wi-fi, mini bar, and my personal favorite: custom air-conditioning control.
On top of that, the window frames can be opened in order to let fresh air in.
They’re all subsequently divided into three different categories: 204 Urban rooms, 100 Privilege rooms and 7 Privilege Class rooms. Urban rooms feature a minimalistic design with neutral colors in a 25 m² area (269 sq ft), with separate shower and toilet and double or king size bed.
Enjoy a comfortable private transfer from/to the Airport in Barcelona – Book well in advance to guarantee the service of your transfer.
Privilege rooms were decorated following the same color patters of the hotel in white, red and black. They offer spectacular views, separate bath/shower and toilet, office desk and lounge in an area of 30m² (322 sq ft).
Privilege Class rooms
Privilige Class rooms on the other hand, follow the same top notch decor but they’re taken into the next level. They’re all above the 22nd floor so expect breathtaking views.
Dimension wise they cover an area of 45m² (484 sq ft), and besides all the given features, they come with mini hi-fi system, pillow menu, accesories such as bathrobe and slippers and special amenities from Hermés.
Privilege Class rooms
A wellness center is located on the 17th floor where you can exercise and relax at the sauna and sensation showers while enjoying excellent views.
Treatments not included on the room’s price are also available. Spiral Restaurant on the ground floor, invites you to taste the best Mediterranean and international creative cuisine.
One of the strongest features at Hotel Porta Fira is the diverse assortment of conference and meeting rooms. All multi function soundproof rooms are equipped with audiovisual facilities and technical assistance, storage services, food and drinks on request and wi-fi connection.
Every room can supply the needs for events such as weddings, banquets or business meetings, ranging from small, 10 people capacity rooms, to a 778 m² (8.374 sq ft) venue with natural light capable of seating 720 people. One of the loveliest is the special banquet room with access to the Japanese garden.
