Santa Maria del Mar

Santa Maria del Mar is one of the few true examples of the catalan gothic style. As a matter of fact, it's one of the most impressive religious buildings in Barcelona.

The Cathedral of the Sea

The church is famous for being the background setting of the best selling book “La Catedral del Mar” (Cathedral of the Sea) by Ildefonso Falcones.

Set in the blooming 14th century Barcelona, the story develops while the church is being constructed. Many people feel that the success of the novel finally has given Santa Maria del Mar the fame it deserves.

Considered the main church of El Born neighborhood, the construction started in 1329 with the help and contributions of local residents. In spite of its heavy exterior, the inside it's beautifully lit and generous in space.

It's well recommended to make a visit at sunset, there is a gorgeous effect when the sun hits on the stained-glass windows. Certainly, is one of the medieval buildings in Barcelona that deserves a visit.
