Past and present meet on this exclusive 5 star Hotel located in the heart of the Gothic Quarter. Modernity, tradition, vanguard and history were the primary focus of Príncipe de Asturias awarded architect Rafael Moneo, responsible for bringing to life the magic of the Mercer Hotel Barcelona.
Design & History
The element that clearly differentiates Mercer Hotel Barcelona from the rest of its kind, is the possibility to inhabit within the Roman Wall of Barcino, going back as far as the 1st century AC. It’s no wonder that stone and wood are the main visible entities of this high profile renovation, giving extra value to historic references, such as a XVI century beam covered with medieval paintings, without giving up a fresh and modern appearance.
If you’re interested in literature and history, there is an intriguing library on the ground floor filled with a complete catalogue of volumes dedicated to the history of Barcelona. It’s worth to take a look as it’s located on the most important part of the Hotel, on the former Guard rooms of the Roman Wall.
Every little detail has been subject of consideration regarding the room’s decor and confort. Mercer Hotel Barcelona only has 28 rooms, and the smallest standard room has a 30 square meters area, a fact that indicates the preference over quality rather than quantity.
Every room has been decorated with a special historical treasure, and they all mantain their original roof height as well as their original wooden beams.
Special mention to the 150 square meters Great Suite, a privileged set of two divided suites that overlooks Lledó street as well as the interior orange courtyard.
You may find Mercer Hotel Barcelona a bit formal at a first approach, but soon enough you’ll realize that a relaxed atmosphere is what reigns, especially on the whooping terrace with exciting views of the Barcelona Cathedral and Santa María del Mar.
After going up the two watchtowers of the Roman Wall, you can relax to snacks and drinks right by the poolside, a privilege open to the general public as well.
Down by the ground floor you can also enjoy the best gastronomical experience at Mercerino Restaurant, fresh Catalonian cuisine with a French twist. With special delights prepared with fish from the Costa Brava, meat from the Pyrenees and vegetables from the Llobregat, and of course a very respectable wine cellar with a wide range of Catalonian, French, and California wines.
On the opposite side, Vermut Mercerino takes the concept of a tavern to new heights, with a detailed menu of appetizers, cold tapas and selected drinks, set in a modern yet historic background and at the best prices. Accesible from the street, it’s also opened for non-guests.
